Till the last moment it wasn’t shure that the race will take place. The forecast was showing winds up to 40kt. However on the Saturday (02.10) morning the wind dropped a bit.
We picked Nautica 450 RACE as our boat for this race and teamed up in crew of Michał Korneszczuk/Mirosław Majcher. After correct start we were facing long beat from Gdynia to Sopot. We had to seek shelter from short steep wave tacking towards shore. During this leg we were following in short distance boats such as Skippi 650, Delphia 24 and J/80. Our boat was topping speeds of 6,5kt in the wind up to 20kt. Next leg - Sopot-Gdansk was a close reach. Thanks to good work with the wind we managed to overtake Delphia and Skippi. We were left with J/80 as a next one. After the gybe on the mark we took the trip back to Sopot sailing broad reach, planning all the time. We overtake J/80. Out of the monohulls we are left only with three, big offshore racing yachts Duży Ptak, Swallow i Fujimo. Two last are too far away, but the distance to Duzy Ptak is disappearing. We reach Sopot and go for last leg to Gdynia. We hoist our 21,8m2 genaker and blast away. Wind tops 25kt. Duży Ptak - 100m, 50m away. We need to gybe and maybe due to being tired, unfocused…we capsize. Drop the genaker, right the boat and sail again. Genaker is up again, next gybe and sail to the open sea. Next gybe and it is almost there, but we capsize again. Now we are with the mast down. It takes a bit longer. Meanwhile, Delphia passes by. After we are up we gain again, but the finish line is too close and we finish as a 5th monohul and first dinghy.
It is a pity a bit, but we had fun for sure. Our GPS recorded top speed of 14,1 kt! 58 Gulf of Gdansk Race won Adam Skomski/ Jakub Kopyłowicz on their catamaran Exploder 20. Red lamp (last boat to finish) was awarded to yacht Caper (skipper: Waldemar Kozieł). |
